INSPEED ANEMOMETERS

MINIMUM:  the lowest speed that Inspeed anemometers are designed for is roughly 3 mph (4.8 kph).

MAXIMUM:  Approx. 125 mph (56 m/s, 200 kph). We have been told of higher reported speeds (199 mph), but mostly coming from users applying a high speed blower to one side of the rotor – which is not correct…

CALIBRATED RANGE:  we periodically send anemometers to a wind tunnel for calibration/verification.  The wind tunnels we use only go up to about 50 mph (80 kph), so we are only able to verify our displays up to about 50 mph, even though they will read much higher.  We assume that the accuracy remains correct beyond the calibrated range.

ACCURACY STATEMENT:  the greater of 1 mph (1.6 kph) or 3 to 4% of reading, from 5 to 50 mph (8 to 80 kph), estimated 4% of reading above 50 mph (80 kph)

TEMPERATURE RANGE:

We do not have an official range but can vouch for Inspeed anemometers used from Alaska and Canada (COLD!) to the deserts of Saudia Arabia and Morocco (HOT!).

MOUNTING

The standard anemometer mounting bracket is a flat aluminum bar that is 1/2″ (12.5mm) wide and 1/8″ (3mm) thick, with 2 holes for #10 screws.

“CLASSIC” & “HD” Models

the Classic is the most affordable unit.  Serviceable yes but a bit of work to replace the reed switch.

The HD was introduced in order to allow for Reed, Hall, and Optical sensors, which are all available, and to allow tube mounting.  (Also has the same body as the e-Vane). It is easily serviceable.  It has a longer shaft which makes it less prone to vibrate and is hence more durable than the Classic.

All the performance specs remain the same as far as accuracy is concerned – same bearings and rotor.

DIAMETER

approx. 6 in (152 mm)

LENGTH
approx. 11 in (280 mm) overall

WIRE

We use exterior grade, unshielded, ungrounded signal cable with a UV-resistant gray PVC jacket.  Roughly 1/8″ (3mm) diameter.

ACCURACY

Based on the data to the right:  the greater of 4 degrees or 2% of reading

WIRE

We use 3-conductor unshielded, ungrounded signal wire with UV-protected PVC black jacket.

Not sure of the max wire length but up to 150 feet (approx. 50m) is no problem.

INSPEED E-VANES

Inspeed e-Vanes are designed to be high precision, zero deadband, reliable, and very low friction.

SENSOR

The active sensor is a Hall chip, with a magnet “hovering” over the top of it, so there is no friction – unlike potentiometer anemometers.  Nothing to wear out and zero deadband.

The chip is an Asahi-Kasei EM3242 absoluten encoder with 10 bit resolution.

POWER

2.7-5.5VDC input (we include circuitry to limit the voltage to the chip)

Power consumption approx. 0.3 mA

OUTPUT

5-95% of input voltage, or, at 5VDC:  .25V to 4.75V
